Neo Zeon Suits:
Neo Zeon Mobile Suit
MSN-04 Sazabi
Pilot / Char Aznable
In UC 0092, four years after his disappearance at the end of the Gryps conflict, Char Aznable resurfaces as the leader of a new Neo Zeon movement. The mighty Sazabi is Char's personal mobile suit, which he frequently uses to lead his troops into battle against the Earth Federation and its Londo Bell taskforce.
Designed to take advantage of Char's newtype powers, the Sazabi is equipped with a psyco-frame - an array of microscopic psycommu transceivers, installed in the cockpit sphere and throughout the mobile suit's frame, which dramatically increase the sensitivity of its psycommu system. This allows Char to use up to six remote-controlled funnels, and also increases the responsiveness of the Sazabi itself. Thanks to new, lightweight armor materials and its abundance of maneuvering verniers, the Sazabi is superbly agile despite its size.
Though the Sazabi's basic design and the psyco-frame technology were created by Char's Neo Zeon, its actual development and construction were handled by Anaheim Electronics. Since Anaheim was also supplying the Earth Federation, its work for the Neo Zeon was performed in utmost secrecy at the company's Granada factory site.

MSN-03 Jagd Doga
Pilots /
Gyunei Guss
Quess Paraya
After the production of the general-purpose Geara Doga, Char Aznable's Neo Zeon forces set out to create specialized mobile suits for their handful of newtype pilots. Lacking the resources to test and manufacture such sophisticated machines, the Neo Zeon commissioned Anaheim Electronics to handle the task. Development of the Jagd Doga took place in utmost secrecy at Anaheim's Granada factory, using the Principality of Zeon's old MSN model number for camouflage purposes.
Based on the Geara Doga's frame, the Jagd Doga incorporates a compact psycommu system, which allows a newtype pilot to control the remote funnel weapons mounted on its shoulder armor. The Jagd Doga also carries plenty of conventional weaponry, with grenade launchers inside its shoulder armor and four mega particle cannons inside its shield. Despite its high performance and heavy firepower, the Jagd Doga was deemed inadequate as a newtype mobile suit, and its development was halted after the completion of two prototype units. Work began on an all-new mobile suit, with a larger frame and a new approach to the psycommu system design - the MSN-04 Sazabi.

The Geara Doga is the standard mobile suit of Char Aznable's Neo Zeon organization. Based on a design created by the original Neo Zeon, it was updated with a new control system and then put into production by Char's forces. Of the roughly 100 Geara Doga units produced, 82 see battle as part of the Neo Zeon fleet. Approximately ten of these are command versions equipped with communications antennas. These are used by squadron leaders like Neo Zeon ace Rezin Schnyder, whose Geara Doga is painted in shades of blue.
Though the Geara Doga's design is relatively simple, it's a rugged and versatile mobile suit which can be adapted for a wide range of missions. Its armament options include a variety of beam rifles - a two-barreled rapid-fire type for regular troops, and a heavier model for officers - a multipurpose beam sword-axe, shield-mounted grenade launchers, and a set of disposable rocket launchers called "stürm fausts."

MSN-04II Nightingale
Pilot / Char Aznable
This mobile suit doesn't actually appear in the animated version of Char's Counterattack. Rather, the Nightingale is from the novelization of Char's Counterattack, written by director Yoshiyuki Tomino, in which it takes the place of the MSN-04 Sazabi.
The massive Nightingale is a further evolution of the Sazabi's design, halfway between a mobile suit and a mobile armor. Its shoulder armor sports ten funnels - scaled-down versions of those used by the NZ-333 Alpha Azieru - and it's armed with a powerful mega beam rifle. The Nightingale's skirt armor also houses a pair of "hidden hands" like those of the PMX-003 The O, which unfold to help defend its bulky body in melee combat.

Kayra Su
Hathaway Noa
The Jegan is the latest in the long line of mass-produced Federation mobile suits descended from the RGM-79 GM. Though it was designed in UC 0089, it's only now making its way to the front lines; while the Londo Bell force and the Federation's Luna Two garrison are equipped with Jegans, many other Federation units are still using the older RGM-86R GM III.
Designed for an era of relative peace, the Jegan emphasizes economy over performance. Though it's highly maneuverable, the Jegan has very little armor and is equipped with only short-range armament, including a rack of hand grenades on its hip and missile launchers in its shield. Against the rugged and heavily-armed Geara Dogas of Char's Neo Zeon army, even a skilled pilot like the Londo Bell's Kayra Su can do little with this minimalist mobile suit.

RGZ-91 Re-GZ
Pilots /
Amuro Ray
Kayra Su
Chan Agi
The Re-GZ - short for "Refined Gundam Zeta" - is the byproduct of Anaheim Electronics' efforts to create a mass-produced version of the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam. To cut costs and eliminate vulnerable transformation mechanisms, Anaheim designed the Re-GZ to dock with a separate booster, rather than having the mobile suit itself transform. Still, the end result was deemed too expensive for production purposes; the Re-GZ's development was halted, and the lone prototype given to Londo Bell ace pilot Amuro Ray.
Though the Re-GZ is a simplified version of the original Zeta Gundam, it's still far superior to the standard Jegan mobile suit. Its standard armament includes grenade launchers on its hips and forearms, and a rack of hand grenades inside its shield. When docked with its Back Weapon System, the Re-GZ's firepower is greatly enhanced with the addition of one large and two medium beam cannons. The BWS booster also includes propellant tanks for extended cruising range. But despite these capabilities, the Re-GZ is outmatched by the newtype mobile suits of Char's Neo Zeon, and at best it's just a stopgap until the completion of Amuro's custom-designed Nu Gundam.

Londo Bell Mobile Suit
RX-93 Nu Gundam
Pilot / Amuro Ray
When Char Aznable reappeared at the head of a new Neo Zeon army, his old rival Amuro Ray - now a member of the Earth Federation's Londo Bell taskforce - began preparing for the inevitable confrontation. Working with the engineers of Anaheim Electronics, Amuro designed a state-of-the-art newtype mobile suit based on the original RX-78 Gundam. Three months later, the Nu Gundam was completed, just in time for the final battle with Char's Neo Zeon.
The most distinctive feature of the Nu Gundam is its complement of psycommu-controlled fin funnels. These remote weapons provide both offensive and defensive capabilities; not only does each fin funnel house a powerful mega particle cannon, but the funnels can surround the Nu Gundam and form a protective beam barrier. Aside from its newtype weapons, the Nu Gundam is a relatively simple and orthodox design, but Amuro's learned over fifteen years of combat experience not to put too much trust in fancy gimmicks.
Even as the development of the Nu Gundam was under way at Anaheim's Von Braun factory, the company was secretly manufacturing weapons for Char's Neo Zeon forces at its Granada facility. Curiously, one piece of Neo Zeon technology found its way from the Granada team to the Von Braun staff, and at the last minute the Nu Gundam was adapted to use the same psyco-frame system as Char's own MSN-04 Sazabi.

RX-93-v2 Hi-Nu Gundam
Pilot / Amuro Ray
Gundam War Pilot/ Gundam_25
The Hi-Nu Gundam doesn't actually appear in the animated version of Char's Counterattack. Rather, this is the version of the RX-93 Nu Gundam used in the novelization of Char's Counterattack, written by director Yoshiyuki Tomino. (The "Hi-Nu" moniker is presumably a reference to the novel's original title, "Hi-Streamer.")
While the orthodox Nu Gundam was the product of a rushed development schedule, the Hi-Nu reflects what Amuro's personal mobile suit could have been with additional development and testing time. One key design improvement is the addition of funnel pods on its back, to which the fin funnels are attached in wing-like fashion. When connected to these pods, the fin funnels can be refueled and recharged, greatly extending their useful lifespan.
For maximum firepower, the Hi-Nu can be outfitted with an optional hyper mega bazooka launcher. In the Char's Counterattack novelization, this weapon is hooked up to the main engine of the Londo Bell flagship Ra Cailum via a pair of energy transmission cables, allowing Amuro to bombard the runaway asteroid Axis.

The hero of the original Gundam series and the pilot of the RX-78 Gundam, Amuro starts off as a sullen and antisocial youth more comfortable with machines than people. His parents separated when he was a child, and Amuro moved with his father Tem Ray to the under-construction Side 7. Here, Tem concentrated on his military research, leaving Amuro's neighbor Fraw Bow to look after the boy and make sure he remembered to eat his breakfast. Amuro's knack for gadgetry is demonstrated by his hand-made toy robot, the notorious Haro.
Once fate places Amuro in the cockpit of the prototype Gundam, his life and personality begin to change dramatically. Though Amuro is fiercely possessive of the Gundam, which he regards as his personal property, he begins to form genuine friendships and develop a sense of duty and compassion. He also begins to manifest his latent newtype abilities, which not only make him a ferocious combatant but also lead him into a doomed rapport with enemy pilot Lalah Sune.
Longtime Amuro watchers will note that he has two special talents in addition to being a newtype killing machine: A knack for electronics, and a penchant for leaping out of moving vehicles.
Zeta Gundam
After the end of the One Year War, the famous newtype ace is seen by the Earth Federation government as a dangerous liability. Placed under virtual house arrest, Amuro at first sits out the new conflict between the fascist Titans and the rebellious AEUG. Eventually, though, his war buddies persuade him to slip his leash and join the struggle. Amuro becomes a member of the Karaba - the AEUG's terrestrial sister organization - and even teams up with his old rival Char Aznable to battle the Titans.
Char's Counterattack
After the defeat of the Titans and Axis Zeons, the AEUG and Karaba are dissolved and their members reintegrated into the regular Federal Forces. Amuro ends up as a member of the elite Londo Bell taskforce, patrolling the colonies and watching out for spacenoid insurrections. It's in this capacity that he once again ends up squaring off against his old foe, and former ally, Char Aznable. Though time has made Amuro gentler and more sociable, it hasn't quenched his hot temper or diminished his combat skills.Age /

Originally a Federal Forces cadet, just six months in uniform, Bright finds himself the highest-ranking survivor of the White Base crew after the surpise attack on Side 7. Rising to the occasion, he proves himself a superb captain and leader, with a stiff British reserve and a swift backhand for disobedient pilots. Bright's military background and no-nonsense temperament place him at odds with his crew of civilian recruits, but eventually he begins to loosen up a little.
Zeta Gundam
After the end of the One Year War, Bright marries White Base pilot Mirai Yashima and fathers two children. Remaining in the Federal Forces, he is given an unglamorous post as captain of the space shuttle Temptation. After tangling with the ruthless Titans, Bright attempts to use his shuttle to smuggle civilian hostages to safety. Rescued from Titans pursuit by the AEUG flagship Argama, Bright joins the resistance group and takes over as the Argama's captain.
Gundam ZZ
Following the death or disappearance of most of the Argama's pilots, Bright soldiers on as captain of the AEUG flagship, teaming up with a new batch of troublemaking civilians. During the difficult and thankless struggle against the Axis Zeons, Bright is further vexed by the attentions of Emily Ounce, flirtacious captain of the dock ship La Vie En Rose.
Char's Counterattack
When the AEUG is dissolved, Bright returns to the ranks of the Federal Forces as commander of the Londo Bell taskforce. From the bridge of the battleship Ra Cailum, he monitors the space colonies for anti-Federation insurgency, and takes the lead in the fight against Char Aznable's Neo Zeon movement.

In the original Gundam series Char is Zeon's most famous ace pilot, nicknamed the "Red Comet" after his mobile suit's color scheme. In the Battle of Loum at the start of the One Year War, Char sank five Federation battleships singlehandedly, spurring speculation that he might be a newtype of the kind predicted by Zeon Deikun. Once he encounters the Gundam he begins a fierce rivalry with Amuro, which escalates after Amuro inadvertently kills Char's newtype protege Lalah Sune.
In addition to his color preference, Char is a man of many eccentricities. He is seldom seen without his face-obscuring helmet, which serves to conceal his secret identity from his fellow Zeon soldiers. He refuses to wear a pilot suit in battle. And, as far as we can tell from the animation, he is unable to drive a car.
It's ultimately revealed that Char is the son of Zeon Deikun, spirited out of Side 3 ten years ago and brought up to carry out a mission of vengeance against the Zabi family which supposedly assassinated his father. Having infiltrated the Principality of Zeon's military in order to get close to his targets, Char doesn't let such trivia as his longstanding friendship with Garma Zabi get in the way of his quest, but his growing rivalry with Amuro proves to be a major distraction.
Zeta Gundam
After the defeat of the Principality of Zeon, Char joins the exodus to the Axis base in the asteroid belt. Soon thereafter he returns to the Earth sphere, ostensibly on an undercover mission for the Axis renegades. Infiltrating the Federal Forces under the alias "Quattro Bageena," Char ends up joining the breakway AEUG group in their rebellion against the oppressive Titans.
Despite his fighting skills, Char evades his leadership responsibilities by hiding behind his Quattro guise, and only towards the end of the conflict does he acknowledge his true identity and become a true leader of the AEUG. Disappearing from the field during the final battle against the Titans, Char sits out the ensuing war between AEUG and Axis Zeons due to his obvious conflict of interest.
Char's Counterattack
After the defeat of the Axis Zeons, Char begins building his own rebel army to challenge the Earth Federation. At the refugee colony Sweetwater, a former AEUG stronghold, Char founds a Neo Zeon movement and begins drawing up a master plan to carry on his father's work by forcing all humanity to emigrate to space. Is he a visionary leader, or a deranged lunatic out to settle an old score with his rival Amuro Ray? Even Char's loyal henchmen aren't sure.

A civilian living at Side 7, Mirai's space glider training makes her the best candidate to man the White Base's helm. Her level-headedness and subtle newtype capabilities make her an excellent ship's pilot, as well as Bright's trusted advisor and confidante. But Mirai's personal life is rather complicated; the daughter of a high-ranking Federation official who resigned in protest against the government's policies, she's initally engaged to pacifist Cameron Bloom, flirts briefly with pilot Sleggar Law, and ultimately settles down with Bright.
Zeta Gundam
After the end of the One Year War, Mirai retires from the military and marries White Base captain Bright Noa. While Bright joins the ranks of the AEUG resistance movement, Mirai stays home in New Hong Kong raising their two children, Hassaway and Cheimin. As the struggle against the Titans intensifies, Mirai tries to get her family off-planet, but the best she can do is flee to safer territory elsewhere on Earth.
Char's Counterattack
When Char Aznable launches his insurrection against the Earth Federation in UC 0093, Mirai is still on Earth playing house while Bright cruises through space looking for trouble. With an asteroid-impact apocalypse looking likely, Mirai once again tries to get off Earth, but is only able to secure a shuttle ticket for her son Hassaway. During the final battle, Mirai and Cheimin can be seen driving aimlessly to and fro, trying to stay out of harm's way.

Char's Counterattack: Story
In the years following the defeat of the Neo Zeon (see Gundam ZZ), the AEUG is disbanded. Many of its members, notably eternal captain Bright Noa and ace pilot Amuro Ray, sign up with the Federal Forces and become the core of a special task force called "Londo Bell." The Londo Bell's mission is to suppress Neo Zeon insurgents and other anti-Federation movements - essentially the same mission as the Titans, the elite force the AEUG was created to oppose, but carried out with less brutality.
In UC 0093, the brief peace is shattered by the reappearance of Char Aznable. Son of spacenoid martyr Zeon Deikun, most famous Zeon ace of the One Year War, and charismatic spokesman of the AEUG, Char is loved by the spacenoids and feared by the Earth Federation. Forming his own Neo Zeon movement, Char plans to cripple the corrupt Federation and liberate the spacenoids by bombarding Earth with asteroids. With vast amounts of dust and debris cutting off sunlight, Earth will freeze, forcing humanity to complete its stalled migration to space. As the story begins, Char's fleet is just completing the first phase of his plan...
5th Luna
Char's Neo Zeon forces are moving the asteroid 5th Luna out of Earth orbit, aiming it at the Federation capital in Lhasa, Tibet. The Londo Bell try to stop the falling asteroid, but they're hopelessly outnumbered, and the Neo Zeons are able to complete the operation and withdraw. Char himself enters the fray to retrieve his top pilot, artificial new type Gyunei Guss, who is being hard-pressed by Londo Bell ace Amuro Ray.
As 5th Luna plows into Lhasa, the Neo Zeons set a course for their home colony of Sweetwater. The Londo Bell pursue them, while Amuro makes a side trip to Anaheim Electronics' lunar factory to collect his new mobile suit, the Nu Gundam. Equipped with a psyco-frame - a cockpit-surrounding shell composed of microscopic psycommu circuits - the Nu Gundam will enable Amuro to fight the Neo Zeon newtypes on their own terms.
Decoy Attack
The Londo Bell summon Amuro back to the fleet as the Neo Zeons launch a sudden attack on their pursuers. Departing the moon with Federation technical officer Chan Agi in tow, Amuro arrives just in time to chase off the enemy. Meanwhile, undetected by the Londo Bell, Char and his top aides slip away and head for Side 1's Londenion colony.
In the aftermath of the battle the Londo Bell come across a damaged commercial shuttle, who occupants include Federation official Adenauer Paraya and his alienated daughter Quess. Also aboard is Bright Noa's son Hassaway, who is in the process of falling for the ill-tempered Quess. Adenauer commandeers the Londo Bell fleet to take him to Londenion.
Londenion
Arriving at Londenion, Adenauer, Char and their accompanying bureaucrats begin secret negotiations. Char offers to make peace, promising to disarm his fleet if the Federation sells him the mobile asteroid Axis (see Zeta Gundam and Gundam ZZ). Thinking they've secured peace in their time, the Federation representatives happily accept Char's solid-gold down-payment.
The negotiations complete, Char unwinds with a bit of horseback riding. He promptly runs into Amuro, who is babysitting Quess and Hassaway. The two old rivals fall to blows, but when Amuro gets the upper hand, Quess intervenes to protect Char. Gyunei shows up to retrieve Char, and Quess is invited to accompany the Neo Zeons on their return trip to Sweetwater. As luck would have it, it turns out that Quess has great newtype potential, and the Neo Zeons soon begin training her as a mobile suit pilot.
Back at Londenion, Federation treasury official Cameron Bloom meets with Bright and tells him about the deal. Suspecting the worst of Char, Cameron sneaks some museum-piece nuclear weapons into Bright's hands... just in case.
Luna II
Their paranoia turns out to be justified. The Neo Zeon fleet shows up on schedule at the Federation's Luna II asteroid base for a formal surrender, but instead bombards the base, wipes out the Federation garrison and captures its stockpile of nuclear weapons. In her first combat experience, Quess destroys the bridge of a Federation ship - as it turns out, the one on which her father Adenauer is standing.
Meanwhile, Char leads a smaller force to claim Axis and begin moving it out of orbit. When his main fleet returns from Luna II, its captured nuclear weapons will be loaded onto Axis for a little extra kick, and the huge asteroid will be dropped on Earth to complete Char's master plan. This will be the ultimate victory of the spacenoids, as well as Char's final revenge on his old enemy Amuro.
Axis
The Londo Bell attack Axis with their own nuclear warheads, but Gyunei and Char are able to intercept the missile attacks. The Londo Bell are forced to withdraw when the main body of Char's fleet arrives from Luna II. Axis begins its earthward movement, with Char's entire fleet guarding it, and both sides gear up for a decisive final battle. Bright has drawn up a desperate plan; he will lead a small group of men to plant explosives inside the asteroid and blow Axis apart.
Meanwhile, Char's underlings are at odds with each other. Quess has developed a huge crush on Char, while the jealous Gyunei taunts her by telling her about Char's fixation on the dead Lalah Sune. Char attempts to play his pilots against each other, telling Quess that she's made him forget all about Lalah, then assuring Gyunei that he has no interest in Quess.
As if Char's motives weren't murky enough, the Londo Bell now discover that the Nu Gundam's psyco-frame technology was supplied by Char himself. Is he setting all this up just so that he can duke it out with Amuro one last time, beat his rival and settle the score for Lalah's death? Even Char's own followers are beginning to wonder...
The Final Battle
The Londo Bell's second assault begins, and Quess intercepts them in the huge mobile armor Alpha Azieru. Amuro manages to drive her off and shoot down Gyunei, then heads toward Axis to disable its engines. Chan swipes a damaged Londo Bell mobile suit and goes to aid Amuro. Hassaway does likewise and sets out to locate Quess, hoping to talk her out of fighting. Chan interrupts and kills Quess, and is then gunned down by the furious Hassaway.
Amuro finds a Neo Zeon cruiser unloading its nuclear cargo onto the Axis and destroys it. The resulting explosion rocks the Axis, ravaging the Neo Zeon fleet and drawing Char's attention. Amuro and Char begin a running duel, which Amuro breaks off to enter Axis and finish readying Bright's explosives. Resuming the fight, Amuro defeats Char and captures his mobile suit's escape pod. The explosives detonate and Axis breaks in half, but Char smugly points out that one of the two halves will still fall on Earth and trigger the new Ice Age.
Conclusion
Wedging the gloating Char's escape pod into the asteroid fragment, Amuro vainly attempts to push the falling rock away from Earth. Dozens of mobile suits join in - Londo Bell, Federal Forces and even Neo Zeon - but Amuro pushes them away with sheer psychic force, lest they burn up as they enter the atmosphere.
To their last breath, Amuro and Char continue to argue. Amuro accuses his foe of being an arrogant elitist, while Char mocks Amuro's faith in humanity; Amuro accuses Char of turning Quess into a killing machine, and Char in turn blames him for the tragic death of Lalah. The two rivals are enveloped in the glow from their psyco-frames, a glow which envelops the entire asteroid and slowly, but surely, deflects it...
